Chiseled bronze, ormoulu, white porcelain.
These very beautiful mounted objects are in a cassolette.
The stepped base is surrounded by a Greek, knotted ties and streaked panels. Lions' muzzles alternate with laurel garlands and hold a ring in their mouths. The lid bears a crown with a laurel and cord motif, the handle is made of an oak branch.
An openwork crown of rings seized in a frieze supports the lid and determines the use and the name of pot pourri.
The Kangxi period lidded pot (late 17th, early 18th) is in white porcelain and bears plant motifs in relief, the body resting on four feet which are the stems of the foliage.
The French bronze workers with the designs of the merchants and haberdashers knew with genius how to reorder oriental ceramics into objects of art among the most beautiful made in the West in the 18th century.
This model was created by Jean Dulac, a merchant haberdashery, who also declined it in removable candelabra, in the 19th century the design was taken up in larger sizes (40 cm), moreover both by the disappearance of small spaces like alcoves and by the birth of industry, the majority of objects of the Ancien Régime were therefore reproduced in larger proportions after the Empire, around 1820.
The importance of merchant haberdashery in the history of art is little known, the Cognacq-Jay museum has directed the light towards these brilliant creators by recently publishing a book "The factory of luxury". Our potpourris went on sale at Drouot in 2013, they are also on the cover of the catalog.
