Pair of framed gouaches with antique Pompeian subjects, Italy, Early 19th century, Circa 1800, Gouache on black background. decorated with animals in situation and putti riding goats. Dimensions with frames: H.19.5cm x W.27cm and H.20.5cm x W.27cm The frames in noici wood and elm or walnut burl from Maison Goude on the Ile Saint-Louis in Paris, a renowned framer in the 1990s. Pretty pair of very decorative gouaches inspired by the surveys during the excavations at Pompeii or Herculaneum, sold as souvenirs at the time of the Grand Tour.
