Jean-Marx CLAUSS was a 19th century Alsatian industrialist, known for having founded a private porcelain factory in Sèvres in 1858 to 1876, located in Sèvres itself, near the Manufacture royale. His initiative marked an ambitious attempt to compete with the famous Manufacture royale de Sèvres, while responding to a growing demand for high-quality porcelain products. Clauss wanted to democratize access to quality porcelain by producing pieces at more affordable prices than those of the Manufacture nationale, while maintaining a neat aesthetic.
