Object description :

"Js Deverberie, “peace” Clock, Directory-consulate Period. "
JS Deverberie, "Peace" clock, Directoire-Consulate period. Rare gilded bronze clock from the end of the 18th century, made by Jean-Simon Deverberie (1764-1824), symbolizing "Peace". Seated on the carriage of a cannon pointing towards the ground, Athena holds in one hand her shield sculpted with the face of Medusa and in the other an olive branch.
The octagonal and arched base is decorated with a bas-relief fresco representing two putti stealing war attributes and two others, helped by their torches, setting fire to the armor.
The whole rests on four superb feet in the shape of an eagle's hock and talons.
Enamelled dial with Roman numerals signed Piolaine in Paris, for Michel-François Piolaine (1764-1815), one of the most important Parisian clockmakers of the last quarter of the 18th century and the first decade of the following century (Tardy, Dictionnaire des horlogers parisiens, page 523).

Superb chiseling work on the whole of this clock which can boast a magnificent original mercury gilding and a rare state of conservation.

Wire movement, in perfect working order, cleaned and revised by an art clockmaker.

End of the 18th century, between 1795 and 1800.

An identical copy in the collections of the François Duesberg museum in Mons, another in the British royal collections at Windsor Castle.
