As was customary in the 17th century, the herd includes cows, goats and sheep. The animals are lying down, in the foreground of the scene, in a flowery setting. In the background, on a height, the shepherdess is accompanied by a few animals and seems to be in deep conversation with the shepherd, standing in front of her. The whole is set in a sumptuous mountainous landscape, on which the silhouettes of a few trees can be distinguished. The sun sets behind the summit, and the sky shines with the colors of the evening.
The work is in very good condition. It has been cleaned and restored. A few rare silhouettes of animals have suffered the wear of time but are nevertheless visible. It has been the subject of a relining in the 19th century. It is offered in an old frame, in black painted wood, in used condition.
The artist
The artist is clearly a follower of Nicolaes Berchem, a Dutch painter well known for his pastoral scenes, who excelled in the painting of livestock. Berchem influenced all landscape painting in Europe until the 18th century. We have here a superb example.
