Rare pewter oil CLOCK, with pedestal with a scalloped base in a bowl, cylindrical barrel, burner with relief decoration of scrolls closing with an articulated flap, fitted with a ribbed blown glass reserve surrounded by a time ribbon.
Height: 34.9 cm.
LANGUEDOC (?), Second half of the 18th century.
Good condition, the base of the blown glass bulb is flush with the upper ring (black area on one of the photos) and the sheet iron wick holder is missing. Operation: the oil level drops as it burns and indicates the time on the graduated time strip. It is important to distinguish between night lights and clock lamps; the former have an inverted pear-shaped bulb, therefore unable to provide a linear relationship between combustion and its reading on the time strip, while the latter have a cylindrical bulb, which alone can satisfy this constant relationship between combustion and its reading.
