Biography:
Henri Girauld de Nolhac is the son of the academician Pierre de Nolhac and Alix de Goys de Mézeyrac. He grew up in the setting of the Palace of Versailles, of which his father is the curator.
Henri de Nolhac began painting, painting mainly portraits. He is also an illustrator, notably for the Stella collection.
On December 27, 1920, in Neuilly-sur-Seine, he married Jeanne Cottin, great-granddaughter of Édouard Hostein.
- His reputation as an illustrator, particularly for the children's press, opened the doors to the Petit Écho de la mode publishing house, for the Lisette magazine and the “Stella” collections; from 1933, he also collaborated with Larousse.
Henri Girault de Nolhac brought back paintings and sketches from his travels in the Pyrenees, in the Puy region or in Geneva.
His mastery of drawing, often enhanced with red chalk, made him sought after as a portraitist in literary, political and diplomatic circles, including those of François Mauriac in 1933, the year of his election to the Académie française, of Pope Pius XII in 1940, and of Jules Romains in 1946, also on his entry among the “immortals”.
He was awarded the Academy Prize in 1942 and the Order of the Legion of Honor.
