Ariadne: What makes the story of Ariadne original is that she is one of the very rare heroines (perhaps even the only one) to achieve a status usually reserved for male heroes in mythology, at the time of their apotheosis.
Ariadne achieves divine status by becoming the wife of Dionysus, and thus joins the ranks of the Olympian gods. Only Heracles obtains such an honor after his death on a pyre when he is finally admitted to his father Zeus and Hera offers him the hand of her daughter Hebe in marriage.
