"Japanese women in a garden"
Oil on panel,
Signed lower right,
Beautiful work with influences from Japanese art by the Marseille painter Henri Rolland who represents Japanese women in traditional dress chatting in a Japanese park.
Different elements characteristic of Japanese art, influenced by exotic images of Japan, are represented here by the artist: geisha in traditional dress, the cherry tree in bloom, the bird feeder, ... This continues in the style with the contrast of flat colors.
This work testifies to the influence of Japanese art in Europe, in the second half of the 19th century, through the diffusion of ukiyo-e prints with particularly bright colors by Hokusai, Utamaro, Hiroshige as well as photographs and art objects that were finely worked and sophisticated works.
As early as 1867, Japan participated in the Universal Exhibition in Paris, a participation renewed in 1878 with undeniable success.
Painter of the Marseille School, Henri Rolland executed personal works signed "H.Rolland" on the subject of genre scenes, portraits, landscapes. However, he is best known as a forger of the painter Adolphe Monticelli.
He was sentenced with his accomplice the framer François Quirini to prison on April 25, 1923.
