Object description :

"Aubusson Tapestry "exotic Landscape With Peacock And Pagoda" 18th Century."
- This 18th century tapestry presents us with an exotic landscape enhanced by the presence of a peacock. Lush vegetation in the foreground, with beautiful red highlights, draws the eye towards the multi-storey pagoda. The peacock's tail, majestic, offers in particular very beautiful details in the weaving which pleasantly occupy the space. The border, which completes the weaving, evokes geometric patterns with a moiré effect.

- This fragment comes from a model woven several times in Aubusson identified as the "Landscape with peacock, curtain, quiver and pagoda", several illustrations of this model in its entirety are presented in the work of Pascal-François BERTRAND "Aubusson Tapestries of Lights" (fig.123 and fig.143 pages 131 to 138).

- The development in the 18th century of these "Verdures à pagode" which evoke fantasized landscapes mixing fauna, flora, exotic architectures, goes hand in hand with the taste of the time for the imagery of distant countries, fashionable in Europe from the end of the 17th century, in particular that of China. They would probably be textile translations of models by the painter of the king Jean-Joseph Dumons.

- Doubled tapestry, Velcro fastening system.

- Very good condition of conservation (ready to be hung), very beautiful freshness of the colors. Good structural condition, note: the left side border has been rewoven, tapestry in width on the right (~10 cm)
