Thivier studio stamp on the back of the canvas and on the back of the frame. French school. 61.3 X 50.3 cm. Emile Louis Thivier was born in Paris in 1858 and died in Lucay-le-Mâle in 1922. He was a student of the academic painter Henri Lehmann (1814-1882) and then took classes at the Académie Julian where the teaching there encouraged him to favor color over drawing. The painter made his debut at the Salon in 1880 and became a member of the Artistes Français in 1887. In 1896, Emile Thivier acquired a property in Lucay-le-Mâle (Indre), Les Cognées, where he and his family regularly went on holiday. After the painter's death, part of the back of his studio was donated by one of his daughters to the Indre Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Châteauroux. The artist freed himself from the austere academic teaching he followed at the beginning, to combine with great dexterity and touching sensitivity, the lessons he received at the Académie Julian. Our painting is a fine example of his mastery of light so dear to the Impressionists whose work he followed. Modern frame in gilded and painted wood. Good condition.
