"Newton Fielding Cerf"
Watercolor depicting a deer moving on the grass by Newton Fielding. It is monogrammed lower right n f. and is enhanced with shellac to render the effect of the coat. The watercolor is framed in a wooden frame from the early 20th century and measures 8.2x9.7 cm alone Newton Fielding was born in London in 1799 and exhibited watercolors at the Society of Watercolor Painters from 1815. He went to Paris where he was one of the initiators of the use of watercolor by romantic artists. He shared a studio with Eugène Delacroix and taught watercolor to the family of Louis-Philippe. He specialized in the representation of animals, publishing numerous educational illustrated albums on the subject and died in Paris in 1856.
