This piece is truly captivating: the shades of blue in the lake, reflecting the sky and clouds, are remarkable.
The pine trees along the lake’s edge are reminiscent of the style of Jean Roger Sourgen. Of high quality, this work, in my opinion, holds its own against his.
At the center of the composition, long boats are depicted (possibly typical of the region).
The exact location of this Landes landscape remains to be identified.
The atmosphere emanating from this painting, with its nuanced blue tones contrasting with the warm-colored shoreline and pine trees, is truly striking.
The painting is in perfect condition.
Dimensions: 102 x 70 cm.
We know little about this painter. Jean-Roger Soubiran, a professor of contemporary art history, described him as follows:
René Gouget de Castéras (1898-1976)
“In his warm and colorful landscapes ‘that evoke the scent of hot sand, heather, and resin,’ René de Casteras, who lived for a long time in Mont-de-Marsan, ‘paints like a poet.’ According to René Violaines, this ‘musketeer of the brush combines the richness of colors with a style that bridges Sourgen, Gueit, and Cabié. (…) The Landes canvases of René de Castéras are neither dull nor monotonous. It’s because he perceives the pine forest with his own unique temperament.’
A sandy path winding through the moor, resin-tapped pines silhouetted against the sky, the dark screen of the distant forest—these are the subjects René de Castéras explored for over a decade through countless variations.
The artist loves the undefined spaces bordering the forest, which allow one to see the tall pines from a distance, appreciate their height, and admire the diversity of their forms. This arrangement provided him with numerous motifs. With well-measured rhythms and striking effects, he added a picturesque quality to his compositions.
Here lies one of those contrasts that the painter masterfully captured. Through his dedicated work ethic and keen observational skills, the artist carved out an enviable place among Landes painters. He always finds in his interpretation, if not the exact note, then at least suggestive nuances that evoke reality. All his works, as well as his views of the Arcachon Basin, testify to his sharp decorative sense, evident in their layout, the presentation of motifs, the emphasis on essential elements, and the overall harmony.”
