Louis XV chest of drawers circa 1765 Coromandel varnish stamped KOFLER JME Jean Mathieu Kofler (1736-1796) L. 92 cm, H. 90 cm, D. 53 cm Cf.: Pierre Kjellberg, Le Mobilier Français du XVIII Siecle, 1989, p. 466 et seq. Born in Vienna, died in Paris. Arriving in France before the end of the reign of Louis XV, he ran a factory and a furniture store at the Cour du Puits, in the district of Saint-Jean-de-Latran, one of the places of freedom that sheltered free labor. In 1791, Kofler sent a letter to the section committee in which he declared himself an academician of his hometown and emphasized the services he had rendered to the State by training many students in drawing and cabinetmaking. After his death there was a public sale of his goods which, according to the advertisements, included "a quantity of furniture in lacquer, mahogany, rosewood and veneer, garnished with copper plates gilded with ground gold".
