Post Mortem Daguerréotype of a Man with a Beard Collar. Image size 7 x 5.5 cm Union-Case size 8 x 9.5 cm On the inside cover of the box, we find in the red velvet, the address in relief "F.Moissenet Dac. Typist N°1 Camp Street N.0". Felix Moissenet was born in France in 1814 and set up as a photographer in 1843. He went to Louisiana in New Orleans in various locations ranging from Royal, Camp and Broadway streets between the years 1849 and 1861. Taking a short break from New Orleans, he set up his studio in New York from 1853 to 1854. He used watercolor to enhance his photographs as in this ambrotype. Photographs of recently deceased relatives were part of American and European culture in the 19th century. They allowed the family to keep a visual memory of the deceased and participated in the grieving process. They were a precious commodity.
