Attracted from adolescence by drawing and painting, after his secondary studies, Jean CHABOUDE attended the fine arts school of his hometown, Belfort, where he worked under the direction of Léon Delarbre. During this period, he filled many sketchbooks, in the company of Bernard GANTNER, his cousin, in the foothills of the Vosges, in Auxelles-Haut. He had a passionate admiration for the painters of Franche-Comté, Courbet of course, but also Jules-Emile Zingg and Roz, whose aesthetic convictions he already shared. In 1948, he left for Paris to complete his artistic studies. In Paris he met the painters of his generation: Rebeyrolle, JJ Morvan, Jouenne, JP Zingg... In 1963, in reaction to the craze for abstract painting, Chaboudé helped found the group "Présence figurative". He painted, drew, engraved, but he also wrote; in 1963 he published a collection of poems and woodcuts, a technique in which he excelled. He also created fabric patterns. Four years after his death in 1987 at the age of 59, a retrospective was dedicated to him in Belfort, in 1991.
