Cornelis Droogsloot the Younger (1630-1674)

Cornelis Droogsloot is the son of Joost Cornelisz Droogsloot (1586-1666). Trained by his father, he worked a lot in the family workshop but also on his own account. It is sometimes difficult to distinguish between the two, especially when the works are not signed. In all cases, the son took up his father's style and was strongly inspired by the composition of some of his creations. Our painting is an example of this. This composition with this portico on the left, a central street that runs towards the horizon with a slope to the right and buildings on either side, is a composition that can be found in the work of Joost Droogsloot. The artist declined several variations with also different formats, a way of proceeding that his son took up. Our painting, which can therefore be attributed to the son rather than to his father, because of some differences, in particular at the level of the fall of the roofs of the buildings that the father used to finish with a cleaner line… comes from this working habit. Apart from the portico on the left and the general framework of the composition, the buildings differ as well as the characters. He offers us a very large number of characters who are grouped in several distinct scenes.
