"Amida Buddha - Japan Edo Period"
Lacquered and gilded wooden sculpture representing Amida Nyorai (Amitabha Buddha), standing on a blossoming lotus in front of a mandorla, his eyes closed and his belly protruding. He is dressed in an elegantly pleated monastic robe. He performs the vitarka-mudr, a gesture of argumentation and explanation of the law. The usnisha pearl and the byakugo (the third eye, between the eyebrows), together symbolize the elevation of the Buddhas to the spiritual state and are both made of crystal. Japan, Edo period, 19th century, circa 1860. In very good condition (one finger missing). Private collection. Dimensions: h.49.5 cm x l.18 cm x p.16 cm.
