On the base, a meticulously chiseled frieze illustrates one of the most tragic moments of the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice: the return of Eurydice to the Underworld. It shows Orpheus, his hand outstretched towards Eurydice, who, carried away by his destiny, returns to the darkness after her husband turns to contemplate her, thus breaking the promise imposed by Hades. The myth of Orpheus and Eurydice Eurydice, Orpheus' beloved wife, dies tragically after being bitten by a snake. Devastated by grief, Orpheus descends to the Underworld where, with his haunting music, he manages to soften Hades and Persephone. They agree to give Eurydice back to him, on the sole condition that he does not turn around to look at her before having crossed the gates of the Underworld. Seized by an unbearable doubt, Orpheus turns too soon, condemning Eurydice to disappear forever.
