Berber, Amazigh, Maghreb Ankle Ring (khlakhel), Circa 1890 - 1910, Heavy Silver-plated Metal

Large and heavy ankle bracelet (461 grs) in silver metal, Maghreb around 1900.
Also called Manila, these objects are not rare, but on the other hand, such large and heavy ones are rare.
A rather surprising fact is that we find these objects and this type of decoration, as well in the Maghreb, the Middle East but also in India.
Superb and rare example heavily decorated with torsos and three friezes of pearls on the entire piece.
The interior is worn, which proves its long use.
Moorish and Indian women wore the ankle bracelet mainly in pairs.
# In some cultures, ankle bracelets were thought to have powers that ward off evil spirits.
In some spiritual practices, ankle bracelets are worn by men and women to symbolize the connection to the earth and nature or to certain spiritual energies.
