Mercedes Garcia Gallardo grew up in Malaga and began her art studies there. When she left for Barcelona, she continued her apprenticeship with professional artists, Manolo Hugué (sculpture and enameling) and Manuel Massana (drawing and painting). In their school, she took different courses on stained glass techniques, primitive art, engraving, sacred symbolism and art history. She specialized in contemporary art and decided to make her passion her profession. In 2006, she opened her own gallery in Cadaqués: the Espace d’Art Gallardo.
Women, the world around her and her deep feelings are her main sources of inspiration. Her paintings represent an infinite palette of situations and emotions transmitted in faces and bodies. She uses pieces of paper, canvas, sentences cut out of magazines, bits of songs or poetry. She sticks them on large patches of acrylic color. This background of the painting serves as a framework to create and give life to her characters in oil. Her painting technique is mixed on canvas, wood or cardboard. The lines are assertive and the colors are frank. The world described in her paintings is a colorful and living world that she approaches head-on with close-up faces (mainly women) or landscapes largely inspired by her current place of life (Cadaqués).
