"Important Pair Of Louis XVI Candelabra In Gilt Bronze And White Marble, 70 Cm, Rams Decor"
Pair of Louis XVI Gilt Bronze Candelabras This pair of gilt bronze candelabras, representative of the Louis XVI style, is a remarkable example of the elegance and sophistication of this period. Measuring 70 cm in height, these pieces are distinguished by the exceptional quality of their gilding and chiseling, testifying to the know-how of 18th century artisans. General description Each candelabra rests on a base of Carrara marble, a material prized for its finesse and whiteness. This base is decorated with finely worked gilt bronzes, giving a perfect harmony between the metal and the stone. The marble support is enhanced by four round feet decorated with gadroons, a classic motif of the Louis XVI style. These feet provide stability while adding a discreet but refined decorative touch. Above the base, a round gilt bronze base is adorned with acanthus leaf decoration, an emblematic ornamental motif of the period. This element serves as a transition to the central shaft of the candelabra, whose equally sumptuous ornamentation features finely chiseled rams' heads. These animal representations, typical of neoclassical iconography, symbolize robustness and refinement. Upper part and light arms The upper part of each candelabra is composed of a set of eight light arms spread over two levels. These arms, in gilded bronze, have an elegant and complex structure, reinforcing the visual balance of the whole. Each arm ends with a bobèche intended to receive a candle, and the composition is crowned by a pine cone, a decorative element inspired by Antiquity. The two-level arrangement ensures a harmonious diffusion of light, while emphasizing the verticality of the piece. Quality of production These candelabra are distinguished by their rich gilding, applied with care to guarantee a lasting shine. The remarkably precise chiselling reveals the talent of the craftsmen who worked on their creation. Every detail, whether it is the reliefs of the acanthus leaves or the texture of the rams' heads, bears witness to meticulous work, capable of enhancing the shapes and patterns. The choice of materials, Carrara marble and gilded bronze, also underlines the desire to combine durability and aesthetics. Auction This pair of candelabra was put up for auction in 2014 by Oise Enchères. It found a buyer for the sum of 7,440 euros, including fees. This price, certified by an invoice, reflects the value of these pieces on the art market, where they are recognized for their exceptional quality and historical interest. In short, these candelabra embody both the elegance and technical perfection of the Louis XVI style. Their combination of noble materials, their refined iconography and their artisanal know-how make them prized collector's items.
