The pastel comes from the collection of an important Florentine family. Some traces of humidity at the bottom they caused ripples in the parchment.
Meyer was a portraitist of German origins who became a naturalized Englishman. A student in London of the German painter Christian Friedrich Zincke, he specialized in portraiture and miniature, portraying noblemen, ladies and children belonging to the English nobility. His female portraits were executed by him with soft, delicate and velvety tones. He mainly produced miniatures but larger-format pastels are also documented.
