The scene depicts a souk, likely in Marrakech, and is perfectly representative of the artist's work, as it is one of his favorite subjects.
As shown in this piece, the painter, with his luminous impasto technique, captures the essence of bustling Moroccan markets with remarkable skill.
The ambiance of the souk, with its stalls, inhabitants dressed in traditional attire, and rays of light streaming through the latticework, showcases Pontoy's mastery in recreating this unique atmosphere.
The artwork is in excellent condition.
It is sold with a modern frame (some minor damage).
Henri Jean Pontoy was a French painter, recognized as one of the last representatives of neo-classical Orientalism. Born in Reims, he dedicated much of his career to depicting scenes of daily life in North Africa, particularly in Morocco, where he lived from 1927 to 1965. His works capture fleeting moments and highlight urban landscapes and lively market scenes.
Pontoy participated in various exhibitions, including the Salon des Artistes Orientalistes Algériens in 1927 and the Salon de l’Afrique Française in Paris in 1947. His works were showcased in museums, notably in Casablanca. He also competed in the painting event at the 1924 Summer Olympics.
Many of his pieces are now displayed in the Museum of Orientalism in Marrakech.
