Object description :

"Bookends "the Crow And The Fox" By A. Walter And H. Mercier"
Glass paste bookend representing on one a fox observing a bunch of grapes on a trellis and on the other a fox spying on a crow holding a cheese. These two scenes refer to the fables of La Fontaine. Glassmaker: Almaric Walter and Sculptor: Henri Mercier. Crow and the Fox H: 15.5 cm / 8.5 cm / 8 cm Crow and the Grapes H: 14.5 cm / 8.5 cm / 7.5cm A few small chips on the back of both pieces. Amalric Walter took the art of glass paste to the highest level and contributed to the reputation of the Nancy School throughout the world. He was a designer, successively mastering the idea, the drawing, the modeling, the harmony of colors and the finishes. No glassmaker of the Nancy School mastered the entire chain like him, from creation to the finished object. After training at the Manufacture de Sèvres, he joined the famous Daum crystal factory in Nancy in 1903 and passed on his expertise in glass paste. During these 10 years of collaboration, he created around a hundred pieces in very brightly colored glass paste. He worked with great freedom in the factory. He had his own staff, his own workshop and was not interested in the other glassmakers at Daum. However, it seems that despite some successes, Almaric Walter's glass paste process did not meet his employer's expectations. Indeed, it took almost 6 years to see the first achievements. After the war of 1914-1918, he set up his own business at 31 rue Eugène Ferry in Nancy. He received the diploma of honor at the Universal Exhibition of 1900, and the gold medal at the Exhibitions of Nancy in 1909 and Brussels in 1910.
