Amand-Durand is praised for having accomplished the difficult task of renewing Rembrandt's original copperplate drawings. It was through Amand that many Old Master works were saved. He also restored plates by Rembrandt, Albrecht Durer, Beham, Martin Schongauer and other Old Masters of the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries. The task began when the Louvre's chief curator entrusted Amand-Durand with the important mission of restoring Rembrandt's worn and fragile engravings.
Charles Amand-Durand (1831-1904) appears to have been the creator of a special gravure printing process ; he is known for the high quality of his print reproductions, produced under the direction of Duplessis, curator of the Département des Estampes at the Bibliothèque Nationale at the time. In particular, he reproduced prints by van Dijck, Dürer, Potter, Claude Gellée, Mantegna, Ruisdael, Schongauer, Lucas de Leyde, A. van Ostade, Rembrandt, etc.
In the book “Art in Reproduction” by Robert Verhoogt, Charles Amand-Durand and his work are quoted; on reading it, we can understand that the technique was the reproduction of old prints with a photographic camera, the work consisted of taking a negative, making a positive contact plate and proceeding with the classical heliogravure to engrave the copper plate. It seems that this was also done in cases where the original plate was too deteriorated to obtain a reprint.
After careful research, we know that Charles Amand-durand and Rapilly Libraire & Editeur worked directly with the original plates of the great old engraving masters, so the result obtained by this process is faithful to the original.
For your information, original prints by Martin Schongauer sell for tens of thousands of euros, and sometimes more than 100,000 euros. This is just to let you know that you're looking at a print that matches the original in size and detail for a very reasonable price, especially as you'd have to be a very well-informed connoisseur to recognize that this is a 19th-century print based on Martin Schongauer's original plate.
I'd like to point out that the print is very beautiful, but my photos taken through the glass are of poor quality.
