Object description :

"“view Of The Port Of Tangier”, Oil On Canvas Orientalist, Gavin Robert, (att) (1827-1883). "
Very beautiful oil on canvas depicting musicians in the port of Tangier. The scene is constructed on several planes quite close to each other. The bottom third represents characters and architecture, all with a predominance of warm colors. The upper two thirds of the painting represent the sky at sunset with a predominance of cold. The effect produced is very calculated and makes the viewer want to project themselves into the scene. Beautiful original frame. An old note on the back of the frame of the painting indicates Gavin - 1827 - 1883 - Scottish school 19th century - Port of Tangier. "Gavin Robert. Genre painter and landscaper born in 1827 in Leith, died in Newhaven on October 5, 1883. Scottish School. He studied at the Edinburgh School of Drawing. After several trips, he stayed in Tangier and executed many Moorish subjects there. In 1879, he became a member of the Royal Scottish Academy. Gavin also visited the United States. It was as an orientalist painter that he notably established his reputation. He exhibited on several occasions from 1855. The Edinburgh Museum has his works: First Love of a Young Moor, and that of Liverpool: Rebecca at the Well. (Source Benezit)" Please note: this painting is in good general condition. An accident to the canvas in the sky on the left - the cloud - visible in photos, which can be restored. There are cracks on the canvas. Two small accidents to the frame, top right and bottom left.
