The bottom third represents characters and architecture, all with a predominance of warm colors. The upper two thirds of the painting represent the sky at sunset with a predominance of cold. Genre painter and landscaper born in 1827 in Leith, died in Newhaven on October 5, 1883. Scottish School. He studied at the Edinburgh School of Drawing. After several trips, he stayed in Tangier and executed many Moorish subjects there. In 1879, he became a member of the Royal Scottish Academy. Gavin also visited the United States. It was as an orientalist painter that he notably established his reputation. He exhibited on several occasions from 1855.
