"Orientalist Watercolor By Amable Crapelet 1822-1867"
Very pretty watercolor on paper measuring 7cm x 11.5cm plus slightly damaged frame 25cm x 30cm dedicated, dated and signed lower right "to my friend Valment A.Crapelet 59" (I think I read for 1859) we see oriental characters with a boat (felucca?) palm trees and the sea in the background Louis Amable CRAPELET born in Auxerre in 1822, died in 1867 in Marseille He trained in the workshops of COROT, DURAND-BRAGER and SECHAN CRAPELET who left for Cairo in 1852 and did not return until 1854, after having traveled through Upper and Lower Egypt and gone up the Nile. He made a trip to Tunis in 1859. For several years he was a decorator for the theaters of Lyon and Marseille. He appeared at the Paris Salon from 1849 to 1866 with views of Egypt.
