Born in Saint-Jean-d'Angély (Charentes-Maritimes) and died in Saint-Martin-lès-Melle (Deux-Sèvres)
Son of a municipal tax collector. Left for Paris to study medicine, which he quickly abandoned to devote himself to painting and drawing. Joined the studio in 1840 of the Prix de Rome winner Michel-Martin Drolling (1756-1851) and then discovered Delacroix, Descamps, Marilhat... Exhibited at the Salon from 1843. In 1845, his drawings, historical scenes or characters taken from the novels of Victor Hugo earned him flattering comments from Baudelaire, art critic. He also produced illustrations and paintings inspired by the works of Sand, Musset, Byron... in the 40s/50s. He also painted scenes from the studios of historical painters (Rubens, Rembrandt, Tintoretto). Traveled to Italy in 1846 with Alfred de Curzon (1820-1895), his fellow student of Nicolas-Louis Cabat (1812-1893) at the Beaux-Arts, and revealed himself fully in landscapes, with effects of shadow and light reminiscent of Corot. Also genre scenes: "Scène de tripot", "La gazette", "Rendez-vous de chasse" and "La partie de cartes", for which he obtained a gold medal. Also exhibited at the Brussels Salon. The painting 'la visite d'amateurs' from 1867 was purchased for the collection of the King of the Belgians. Many other medals at the salons where he exhibited from 1843 until 1890 ca.
