A stunning gold-background lacquer in the Art Deco style, signed by the artist Jean François Durand-Chapron, known as Jean Durand.
This mixed-technique lacquer is highly decorative and depicts gazelles, or more specifically impalas, drinking by a riverbank.
The scene is most likely set in North Africa.
Jean Durand masterfully captured the posture and movement of this family of bovids. The surrounding vegetation is also exquisitely rendered.
The work is signed and dated in the lower right corner: Jean Durand 42.
Jean Durand (1894-1977) was a French artist renowned for his Orientalist and animal-themed works.
Among his notable creations is "Le Cortège de la Mariée" (1939), an oil on panel with gold highlights, illustrating a traditional Tuareg wedding procession.
Durand-Chapron also worked in lacquer, a technique prized for its finesse and brilliance. For example, a lacquer panel featuring marching monkeys showcases his skill in using this medium to depict animal motifs.
