"Adolphe Louis Gaussen (1871-1957) The Church Of Sainte Marie Madeleine In Martigues"
A rich and creamy material that alternates with the reserves of the wooden panel. A technique that the artist mastered perfectly. A solid drawing and beautiful proportions, magnificent colors that perfectly restore the intensity of the summer light of the Mediterranean landscapes and in particular of Martigues the famous Provençal Venice. Made in oil on a wooden panel with the spontaneous technique of the first jet, which makes this work by the Marseille artist Adolphe Gaussen, the great friend of the master mariner Jean-Baptiste Olive, lively and warm. The work is offered in a magnificent and important carved and gilded frame that measures 62 cm by 70 cm and 33 cm by 41 cm for the panel alone. It represents the church of the Madeleine called the "Cathedral" by the inhabitants of the place, on the listed site of the canal St Sébastien and the quai du Brescon called Miroir aux Oiseaux in the historic district of Martigues.
Coming from the collection of Daniel Derveaux famous Art Editor and in excellent condition, it is signed lower right.
Adolphe Gaussen studied painting under the tutelage of Jean-Baptiste Olive at the School of Fine Arts in Marseille. He was appointed official painter of the Navy in 1928. He was curator of the Cantini Museum in Marseille. In 1946, he entered the Academy of Marseille.
