Most of the figurative sculptures of the Jorai are related to ancestor worship and funerary rites. The sculptures generated in this way are known for their moving, time-worn shapes. This large figure is said to have been part of a group placed around a Jorai tomb. Traditional Jorai tombs include small hut-like structures in which the deceased's belongings are placed as well as offerings. Such statues were created for ceremonies that did not take place at the time of death but often long after burial. The tomb was decorated and then "abandoned" in the frame
