"Attributed To Bernardino Campi (1520-1591). Lamentation Over The Dead Christ."
Scene of lamentation over the dead Christ, canvas attributed to Bernardino Campi. Here we see the mannerist character of Campi, the disproportion between the small head of Christ and his very elongated body is typical of this mannerist production of the middle of the 16th century. The faces of Saint John, on the right of the composition, which we recognize by his beardless and young face, and that of Mary Magdalene on the left, are reminiscent of the faces that we can see in the works of Bernardino Luini, which places our work in the Lombard production, place of origin of Bernardino Campi. The stone on which Christ is placed, the "stone of anointing", which can still be seen today in Jerusalem, functions as in Jean Fouquet's Pietà de Nouhans: its perspective as well as that of Christ gives the impression that He and the stone are descending, sliding towards the viewer, which suggests that our work was located above an altar, figuratively showing the Corpus Christi before it is shown in a sensitive way to the faithful during the Mass in the form of bread.
