"19th Century Painting The Square And Belfry Of Termonde By Jan Frans Verhas"
Superb and large painting representing a lively scene in the city of Termonde or Dentremonde in Belgian Flanders, painted by Jan-frans VERHAS (1834-1896). Jan Verhas or Jan Frans Verhas is a Belgian painter, born in Termonde on January 9, 1834 and died in Schaerbeek on October 29, 1896. He is known for his portraits and genre paintings often representing children of the Belgian bourgeoisie. This nocturnal painting represents a party scene, probably the Termonde Ommegang, which is a very old urban festival that takes place every ten years. On this quality painting we see a whole crowd gathered on the village square on which there is also a kiosk on which we distinguish a few musicians. The sky lit by a full moon gives a special atmosphere. High quality work with a beautiful signature present at the bottom left. Posterior frame.
