By Jules BRATEAU (1844-1923)
Small pewter DISH, with relief decoration, on the wing of falling fruit, cherubs and small mammals, on the navel of a scene representing ULYSSES preparing to join PENELOPE.
Diameter: 23.7 cm.
Clear mark of the artist and countermark "at the gallows".
End of the 19th century, shortly after 1878
Period edition, superb quality and condition
The decoration is not chiseled but comes "raw cast" from the mold of a perfect quality of engraving executed by this artist.
Bibliography: Jean-Christophe Boucaud, "Jules BRATEAU" - The author indicates that this is the first work produced by the artist in 1878 after an engraving by Théodore de Bry around 1600
Generally speaking, all other marks including a crowned rose and other various mentions indicate a post-mortem edition in 1923 from the GRAS et ETIENNE house in ANGERS which used Brateau molds until the 1960s.
Let us note in passing the play on sound intended by the artist between the representation of his counter-punch "au gibet" and his initials J.B.
