By Jules BRATEAU (1844-1923)
Famous set called "PERSAN", in pewter with orientalist decoration, composed of a JUG and its DISPLAY. The first, of flattened baluster shape with curved spillway connected to the body by a pearl arm, is decorated in relief with basketwork decoration and fleurons. The handle attachments represent interlacing of leafy branches. It rests on its circular display with umbilicus, decorated with flowers, rows of pearls and openwork marking:
- on the jug: Clear mark and small mark "au gibet".
- on the display: Clear hallmark and large mark "au gibet".
Very rare autograph signature of the artist on the display
Height of the ewer: 26.7 cm.
Diameter of the display stand: 28 cm.

Contemporary edition of the artist. This is one of his major works created in 1887. State of conservation: the decoration has remained very fresh and its finesse is exceptional. The two-tone wickerwork trim of the handle is original; a consolidation of the lid tab is noted as well as a rework at the base of the jug. The edge of the display stand locally shows a consolidation and a small loss. Bibliography: Jean-Christophe Boucaud: "Jules Brateau, 1844-1923
Generally speaking, all other marks containing a crowned rose and other various mentions indicate a post-mortem edition in 1923 from the GRAS et ETIENNE house which used Brateau molds until the 1960s.
Let us note in passing the play on sound intended by the artist between the representation of his counter-mark "au gibet" and his initials JB
