ROUEN (Upper Normandy), From the year 1768

Beautiful example of the Norman type 1 in very good condition, from the production of one of the most famous Rouen masters.
Bibliography: Les étains normands » by Jean-Claude Commenchal

In Rouen, unlike the vast majority of production centers, the regulations relating to the control hallmark were respected quite scrupulously and the hallmarks were updated very regularly which allows precise dating of the objects, often even to the year as is the case here since the hallmark with the vintage of 1769 is known.
Let us recall in passing that these pitchers were the wine measures of the Ancien Régime. The capacity of those used in inns, drinking establishments, etc., had to be checked periodically by the royal or ecclesiastical authorities to ensure "good measure" for the consumer, but in fact, this regulation was rarely applied and pitchers bearing gauging marks are very rare.
