Rare Saint Joseph With A Flowering Staff, Bas Relief In Walnut From The 17th Century.
Rare and very beautiful representation in bas relief of Saint Joseph with a flowered staff, in an architectural archway.
It would probably be a beautiful element of an altarpiece executed in walnut, a school of Burgundy or Flanders from the 17th century.
This panel is superb and the patina of the walnut wonderfully preserved.
The grain of the walnut is remarkable and gives the sculpture a finesse and a velvety that the photos cannot restore.
If you look at the panel at an angle on the left, Joseph's face appears almost in its entirety.
The staff is almost detached from the support, the drapery is sublime.
Look carefully at the face, as well as the many details, the sculpture work is remarkable.
The panel is made up of two thick original walnut boards. Notice at the top right an original square piece corresponding to a knot of the walnut that had jumped during the carving.
a wonderful Saint Joseph, early in the period.
