TILMANN RIEMENSCHNEIDER (1460-1531) workshop
Georgous Gothic period German sculpture from, depicting 2 of figures of a crucifixion V: St John and the Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus.
The wooden carved panel sculpture is LIME WOOD, used exclusively by this master of sculpture.
At the bottom right, we can see a fixing hole to receive the central part of this crucifixion altarpiece. We can also imagine a pendant on the other side of the cross supporting the horn of Christ, with Mary Magdalene in accordance with classical religious iconography.
Of particular note are the gentleness and beauty of the figures and their strong expressions: The piety of St. John and the sorrow of the Virgin.
The mannerist work of St John's hair is truly characteristic of our sculptor's work and creates a dynamism in the reading of the panel.
Condition: The panel has been stripped in the past but still reveals large parts of primer and polychromy.
