Exceptional pair of pewter PLATES with a wide plain wing called "à la cardinal", engraved with a crowned and palmed coat of arms which is "cut from silver and gules bordered with silver with two hunting horns in chief of azure linked and mouthed and one in base of the same".
Mark assigned to Jean Frédéric WEISS received master before 1696 : crowned rose and lateral initials FW
Diameter: 25.7 cm.
STRASBOURG, Early 18th century

Paradoxically, Strasbourg, a major center of pottery and pewter goldsmithing, hardly produced this type of plateware; to my knowledge, these two examples are the only ones to have appeared on the market in the last forty years... One of the two, mentioned in the old Vialle collection, is reproduced with its coat of arms in "La poterie d'étain en France" by Roger Verdier, volume 6, page 54, reference 756. In very good condition and of good quality, some pitting is however noted.
No research into the attribution of the coat of arms has been undertaken.
Bibliography: "Les étains strasbourgeois" by Adolph Riff
