Gorgeous bronze mortar
bearing around the circumference of its neck with stylized Gothic letters an inscription "A POMAREDO MVCL XXX I"
(the founder used here a medal for each letter and Roman number, like typographic cases)
The Hispanic consonance of the owner name suggests a Spanish origin for the mortar factory, as for the date of 1681 which allows it to be dated very precisely.
The golden gray alloy allows its material to be refined: brass "airin" rather than bronze. The mortar is punctuated on its side by 8 buttresses and 2 tenons allowing its easy handling and use. Its funny and remarkable stylized zoomorphic grips, slender and profiled, could have been designed a few centuries later by Modigliani...
Good condition - note a rounded lack on the edge visible obn photos !
Very nice dark and shiny patina, due to its frequent and repeated daily use over time
Sizes:
9.5cm height
and 16.5cm diameter
Very nice and interesting collector's mortar, atypical and whose medal mentions date it precisely, and could allow it to be attributed to a country of factory
