Ikenga. Ibo. Nigeria. Hardwood, very old brown patina of use on red wood, old polychromy, visible accidents and losses. H: 108 cm Man seated on a stool (here missing) holding a head in his left hand and in his right hand (here missing) a sword (?). His head is surmounted by a succession of heads enhanced with kaolin, the superstructure, probably representing ram's horns is partly incomplete. The Ikenga, a carved wooden figure from the north of the Ibo country, symbolizes personal success and power. Often holding a sword, it represents the profession and status of its owner. The Ikenga, decorated with ram's horns and complex patterns, is a sacred symbol of hard work and mastery. Presumed period: Early 20th century
