Exceptional Chinese Antique Ladies Handbag Forbidden Stitch Embroidery. The Ultimate Gift.

A superb Chinese silk ladies handbag hand embroderied with forbidden stitch, with original coin purse. The ivory clasp hand carved with a "shou" emblem which means longlife and two bats - in Chinese which is a homophone of the word for fu, meaning happiness and good luck. 

It seems that the name Forbidden Stitch was given because the stitch arose in the Forbidden City in Peking (the old English name for Beijing).

Period - early 20th century.
