Huge Sazbla, Hungarian-polish Saber 16th Century

This enormous sabre is outside any norm. It is clearly an oversized version (121 cm) of a Hungarian-Polish Szabla, of the type worn by Stefan Batory's relatives, in the 2nd half of the 16th century. The blade is of classic shape, although very imposing, with its 91 cm long measured in a straight line. On the other hand, the enormous hilt is very rare, and deviates from the known models. The guard which is a reuse of a Hungarian-Polish war hammer from the 16th century is exceptional, not only by the use of a warhammer head but also by the size of this hammer . The very large width of this guard (27.3 cm!) probably explains the choice of an oversized grip
BLADE: This is the classic Szabila blade, with a single edge and a fuller on each side. What is special is the shape of the blade which widens over the last 30 cm near the tip. This blade does not come from Solingen or Styria, it is a fairly rustic local manufacture, as is often the case for blades from this area when they are forged regionally.
Length of the blade = 91 cm, Width near the guard = 3.7 cm, near the tip 4 cm thickness near the guard = 5.1 mm, balance point at 14 cm from the guard, which is logical for a rider's sabre.
GUARD: it is the head of a Hungarian-Polish war hammer, with one side in a "bec de corbin" (=r aven's beak)  and one side in a hammer head. Five rings chiseled in the mass decorate this iron.
GRIP : It is made of wood covered with gadrooned leather, and has in its distal part a strong angulation and a slight widening. It measures 28 cm POMMEL: It is made of iron, with an oval section, chiseled with flower petal patterns. The tang of the blade is riveted directly onto the pommel. The shape of this pommel would rather evoke a Polish influence than a Hungarian one, although the models are very similar.

Hungarian-Polish sabers are always highly sought after by collectors. This one, due to its size, its handle and its appearance of a combined weapon, is a rarity of definite interest.
