Good general condition, old repairs.
This unusual piece of furniture was probably made by a craftsman in Venice in the second half of the 19th century. Its modest dimensions rather suggest that it was intended for a child. Sitting on this kind of throne, he is as if enveloped and protected by the wings of the marvelous animal, whether phoenix or swan.
We can prefer to recognize a swan in this animal and then see an almost obvious allusion to the tale of the ugly duckling by Andersen which appeared precisely at the end of the 19th century and more precisely in 1876.
This tale features a little duck mocked and rejected when he was a child because he was different and who becomes once an adult a magnificent white swan loved and happy, very different from what he was in his childhood:
"Then, he felt ashamed, and hid his head under his wing; he did not know how to behave, because it was too much happiness for him. But he was not proud. A good heart never becomes so. He thought of the way he had been persecuted and insulted everywhere, and there he heard them all say that he was the most beautiful of all these beautiful birds! And the elder tree itself inclined its branches towards him, and the sun shed such a warm and beneficial light! Then his feathers swelled, his slender neck rose, and he cried out with all his heart: "How could I have dreamed of such happiness, while I was only an ugly duckling."
Ugly duckling will grow up, handsome and loved. This is all the happiness we wish for the child who will take a seat in this fairy tale armchair.
