Punu okuyi mask, Gabon. Fromage wood, kaolin, red pigments. H. 38 cm Punu mask with a face covered in kaolin, the eyes in an arc-shaped shape split on either side of a modeled nose. The high headdress in a tripartite shell striated with fine incised locks. Linked to the cult of the dead - white in the local culture suggests the afterlife - the okuyi masks evoke an ideal of feminine beauty. Presumed period early 20th century
