Wrought iron and lacquer
Natural iron Mempo or menpō, of the me no shita men type made in four parts.
The first covers from the chin to below the eyes. The cheekbones are prominent and the chin pronounced. The interior is lacquered red. Two studs are attached with cut-iron rosettes featuring flowers.
The second is removable and protects the nose.
The ears are riveted and pierced.
Finally, the last one is placed under the chin and is pierced to receive the gorgerin. This part is signed MUNE HISA.
The gorgerin has four black lacquered and midnight-blue braided strips.
The mempo was an integral part of Japanese samurai armor.
