"Cherc For Goldscheider Earthenware Figurine “rebecca By The Spring”, C.1900"
Antique Goldscheider earthenware figure “Rebecca by the Spring” – Cherc design
This exquisite early 20th-century ceramic figurine, titled “Rebecca by the Spring”, was manufactured by the renowned Goldscheider company in Vienna. The piece depicts the biblical figure Rebecca in a moment of contemplation by a well, capturing the intricate details and emotion characteristic of Cherc’s artistry.

Crafted in tones of beige, brown, greyish black, and golden hues, the figurine reflects Goldscheider’s reputation for high-quality and expressive designs. Marked with the name "CHERC," a pseudonym attributed to Hans Scherpe, a prolific German artist, this sculpture exemplifies his significant contributions to Goldscheider’s success during the Art Nouveau period.

Historical background:
Founded in 1885 by Friedrich Goldscheider, the Goldscheider Porcelain Factory and Majolica Factory in Vienna became a leading name in European ceramic production. Biblical narratives, classical mythology, and oriental-inspired themes were central to its production, which gained international acclaim with branches in Austria, Germany, Paris, England, and the United States.
