study (mixed techniques, ink, gouache, watercolor) on tracing paper made by the orientalist and Africanist painter Monique Cras. After the Beaux Arts in Paris (JP Laurens workshop), she obtained a scholarship and went to the different countries that made up the French Colonial Empire. she brought back studies taken from life of the people she encountered and made paintings that she exhibited at Parisian Salons, winning numerous awards. our sketch is signed at the bottom right and bears the words "Lobis Gaoua", Gaoua is the capital of a department in the southwest of Burkina Faso, formerly Upper Volta, the Lobis are a people of this country. the Musée des Années Trente in Boulogne Billancourt presents works by Monique Cras her work was presented at the exhibition "Artistes Voyageuses, l'appel des lointains" in Evian and Pont Aven
