Han Dynasty (200 BC- 220 AD) carved wood with white, yellow and black polychromy. China Gansu region. This animal, most likely a ferret or a leopard, is carved with great simplicity. The magical aspect of the animal is symbolized by the bright colors used. It is therefore not a figurative sculpture but a ritual object of a sacred nature.
