"China. Han Period. Mythical Animal."
Han Dynasty (200 BC- 220 AD) carved wood with white, yellow and black polychromy. China Gansu region. This animal, most likely a ferret or a leopard, is carved with great simplicity. The magical aspect of the animal is symbolized by the bright colors used. It is therefore not a figurative sculpture but a ritual object of a sacred nature. The polychromy, applied cold, has retained a remarkable freshness. A complete file as well as an expert certificate from Jacques Barrère in Paris accompanies the object. Provenance: Jacques Barrère in Paris then Personal collection of a former expert in Asian art from the south of France.
